When a Hollywood Director Uses an iPhone

Tuesday, 10 December 2019

Apple commissioned David Leitch to film a short piece with his signature. But here comes the challenge: the entire thing should be recorded on iPhones 11 Pro only.

David Leitch is known by his directing work on Atomic Blonde, Dead Pool 2 and the most recent spinoff of Fast and Furious, Hobbs and Shaw; and he produced the whole John Wick’s trilogy, which by the way I’m a fan of. His actions scenes are so insane that is hard to keep still on your chair when watching his movies without a stir on your spine.

According with DXOMARK, iPhone top-ranked the best camera for video. So that wouldn’t be a problem as you are using the best camera available for a smartphone. So he just needed to get his crew and work it all together.

The outcome is Snowbrawl, a snowball fight with a taste of cinema, meaning nice camera moves, a screenplay and acting. The smart move was to use snow covered field as the filming set, recording in plain daylight, so artificial lighting wouldn’t require much of machinery; keeping things simple, so to speak.

You can watch the result on YouTube right away.

The result is quite impressive, coming from a camera that is always in your pocket. And even more inspiring with the touch of professionals that work on big feature films.
